Valley Lodge hosted the 2010 Portuguese soccer team. A health spa was constructed to accommodate the team. The inspiration for the interior design of the spa developed quite naturally from the site selected for the 840m2 footprint. With great reluctance a few trees had to be cleared from the site to accommodate the new spa building which initiated an interior theme inspired by the wooded surroundings of the spa. The calm, serene nature of a spa led to the selection of materials and finishes reflecting a simplistic yet sophisticated colour palette of shades of white. Vast reflective surfaces of polished porcelain and composite stone are contrasted with the warmth and richness of marble and dark timber. A starlit night sky is reflected in the large indoor pool below and a steel structure combined with a thatched roof creates an unexpected combination of the contemporary with the rustic. Green measures were implemented to reduce the impact of the spa on the environment.
